Persian GCSE and A-Level examination

OCR, examination body, changed its decision and yesterday announced that Persian GCSE and A-Level qualifications are to be continued.

Previously, OCR had announced that as of 2018, the Persian GCSE and A-level qualifications are to be discontinued. Cultured Iranian along with other adherent of Persian culture in a collective effort and by setting up a campaign for rescuing Persian GCSE and A-Level and collecting more than 11,200 signatures in form of a petition, protested against OCR decision for discontinuing the qualification. OCR after some initial resistance finally withdrew its decision and yesterday quietly informed us that Persian GCSE and A-Leves are not to be discontinued and interested students as usual can take these qualifications and sit in the related exams.

We take this opportunity and say thank you to all of you, who supported us in this cause, which secured the future of Persian GCSE and A-Levels qualifications

HICA and iranian in north London celebrated the Ancient festival of Chahar-Shanbe-Soory

Harrow Iranian Community Association (HICA) is proud to inform you that with the support of Iran School’s Staff and parents of the school’s students, manged to celebrate “Jashne-e Chahar Shanbe-Soory” in Harrow Leisure Centre. Iranians in north London participated in this ancient festival and had a very happy and spirit-lifting night, where they were served with Iranian snacks, sandwiches and traditional Ashe-Reshteh. In this night, we have carried out the ancient ceremony of jumping over fire, which is especially fun for younger people. There was also live Persian music that created a happy atmosphere for dancing till midnight.

It is worthy to mention that all money raised in this event is dedicated to be spent on the cost of running Farsi classes in Iran School and those who participated in the festival not only had a happy and unforgettable night but also indirectly supported Iran school in providing Parsi language classes for your children and promoting rich Iranian culture.

HICA wishes you well and is hopeful to see you again in next Chahar-Shanbe-Soory in March 2017.

Secure the future of Persian GCSE and A-level qualifications

As of 2018, the Persian GCSE and A-level qualifications are to be discontinued by Examinations Body, OCR. Yet “It’s only been a few days since UN sanctions against Iran were lifted but some firms have already announced plans to invest in the Iranian market. Some companies have spent months plotting their return to a country rich in natural resources, with a large educated population and spectacular scenery.”  - Ben Morris, Business Reporter, BBC News January 2016 We believe that this is hugely short sighted and it cannot be allowed to happen. Disbanding of formal examinations would be a devastating mistake for our young people, our culture and our language.  There are upwards of 400,000 Iranians currently living in the UK. We ask each and everyone of you to sign this petition, then share it with Iranian friends as well as future minded non-Iranians so we can encourage another examination body to take on Persian. We need 10,000 signatures to get Parliament’s attention and 100,000 to really make an impact. More so than ever, literacy in Persian, a live, modern and increasingly relevant language, offers a plethora of opportunity for the Iranian Community and the UK as a whole, let’s not let it slip through our fingers!

You can by signing this petition do your bit to prevent this ill-decision
